Thomaskirche
The Protestant Thomaskirche in Kempen was built in 1909–1910 to plans by the Mülheim architect Heinrich Heidsiek and consecrated on 17 July 1910.

History of the congregation
A Protestant congregation is first documented in Kempen in August 1543, and a year later an Anabaptist community can also be traced here. In 1545, Albert Hardenberg became the town's first Protestant pastor.
The centuries that followed brought alternating periods of persecution and freedom of belief. Only on 25 November 1846 was the congregation able to consecrate its first own place of worship at the corner of Burg-/Engerstraße.
Building the church
For a new building, the congregation acquired a plot at the corner of Aldekerker/Wachtendonker Straße. The foundation stone was laid on 25 April 1909, and a little over a year later – on 17 July 1910 – the Thomaskirche was consecrated.
The architect
The design was entrusted to Heinrich Heidsiek, an architect from Mülheim, who gave the building its form.
