Kempener Lichtspiele

For more than a century the cinema has been part of the Buttermarkt. It is now run by the fourth generation of the Janssen family – most recently Arnold Janssen handed the business over to his son Frank Janssen on 3 January 2001. The house has renewed itself repeatedly over the years: the façade and foyer were redesigned in September 1994, and Screen 1 was completely rebuilt in May 2002. Despite the multiplex cinemas in nearby Krefeld and Mönchengladbach, this traditional cinema has held its ground. The Janssen group also includes the Herzogtheater in Geldern and the Tichelpark 5 Cinemas in Kleve, whose administration is handled from Kempen.

Four auditoriums offer room for screenings of every size: Screen 1 with 250 seats, Screen 2 with 170, Screen 3 with 95 and Screen 4 with 98. Across all of them, 4K laser projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound and 3D technology deliver an up-to-date cinema experience. Alongside the major releases, a dedicated arthouse programme presents special films, complemented by the "Film am Mittwoch" (film selection) series. The neighbouring cafés and restaurants on the Buttermarkt invite you to linger before or after the film.

From Thursday through Wednesday the cinema opens at 4:00 pm, and at weekends as early as around 1:30 to 2:00 pm – generally one hour before the respective screening. Late shows are usually only on Fridays and Saturdays; different hours apply on public holidays and during school holidays.
