Georgsbrunnen (War Memorial)
A 1912 fountain and war memorial on the Buttermarkt in Kempen, crowned by St George doing battle with the dragon.
On the Buttermarkt in Kempen stands the Georgsbrunnen, a war memorial erected in 1912 that also serves as a fountain. Above a series of basins rises the figure of St George, with the slain dragon lying at his feet.
Purpose and History
The Georgsbrunnen was created as a war memorial for those from the town of Kempen and the municipality of Schmalbroich who were killed in the war of 1870/71. The inscription on the north side of the base plate records its origin and making: "geg. Lauchhammer E. Albrecht fec. 1912" – the work was cast at the Lauchhammer iron foundry, the sculptor was E. Albrecht, and the year was 1912. Since 28 April 1988 the fountain has been protected as a listed building and appears in the list of monuments in Kempen under number 118.
Design and Iconography
The structure is built up in several stages. An octagonal flower basin with a columnar shaft carries two memorial plates, set between an antique pair of female genii. From the millstone-like upper bowl rises an octagonal stone pier whose lion heads act as water spouts. At the very top stands St George: his right hand rests on his sword, his left is set on his hip, his gaze inclines slightly downward, and the slain dragon lies between his feet. The model for this figure of St George is Donatello's rendering, now kept in the Bargello Museum in Florence.
