History

From 1930 onward, the Kamperlings district grew gradually. Once the area was densely enough populated by the 1960s, a place of worship of its own became necessary. In 1969 a prefabricated church was built, and on 15 April 1970 the vicariate of St. Josef was formed within the parish of St. Mariä Geburt.

New Building

In the 1980s, the decision was made to construct a new building. The old church was demolished in early 1988, and construction of the current building began as early as 20 March 1988. The foundation stone was laid on 19 March 1989, and the church was consecrated on 3 March 1990. The design came from architects Günther Schmitz of Aachen and Heinrich Curbach of Gangelt.

Furnishings

The interior furnishings date from the time of construction. In 1992, Josef Ebnöther designed the slender, floor-length stained-glass windows. The altar, baptismal font and ambo were created by Ulrich Rückriem in granite in 1989. The bronze depictions of the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, as well as the cross, are based on designs by Tisa von der Schulenburg.
