Evangelische Kirche Tönisberg
A Protestant community centre in the Tönisberg district of Kempen, whose present building replaced an earlier wooden church in 1975.
In the Tönisberg district of Kempen, at Feldweg 8, stands a Protestant community centre whose history runs from an old schoolroom through a simple wooden church to today's building, completed in 1975.
The Beginnings
For a long time Tönisberg had no independent Protestant congregation. The village's Protestant Christians belonged to the neighbouring parish of Vluyn, which cared for them pastorally. At first there was no church building for their services, so the community gathered in an old school in the village.
A New Congregation Forms
In 1967 two daughter congregations were joined pastorally: St. Hubert, part of Kempen, and Tönisberg, until then assigned to Vluyn. From this union the parish of St. Hubert / Tönisberg emerged. On 1 May 1968 the first pastor took up his post, and later that same year, on 8 December 1968, a place of worship of its own was consecrated in Tönisberg — a simple wooden church. A parsonage was built right beside it, with its topping-out ceremony held on 11 September 1970.
From Makeshift to Community Centre
The wooden church was in use for barely seven years. Following designs by the architect Hans Otto von Schaper, a new community centre was built and inaugurated on 27 April 1975. The wooden church, no longer needed, was then dismantled and relocated to Strümp, where it could continue to serve.
