History
Sources already document a medieval Jewish burial site in Miltenberg for the year 1336, though its location remains unknown. Burials at the Old Cemetery may have begun as early as the 15th century. A 1927 report by the teacher of the Jewish school suggests use during the 16th or 17th century. According to this account, the oldest gravestone still legible at the time dated from 1812.
The New Cemetery
By the close of the 19th century, the Old Cemetery had reached full capacity. This led to the creation of the New Jewish Cemetery at Klausrain, which today lies within the Bergstraße-Odenwald Nature Park.
