History

Originally, the abutments and piers were decorated on the upstream side with towers made of red sandstone. Between 1929 and 1932, the Heubach barrage was built, which required the bridge to be raised to provide sufficient clearance for shipping. This clearance now stands at 6.3 metres above the highest navigable water level, 10 centimetres below the required standard.

Destruction and Reconstruction

In late March 1945, two piers were blown up during the Second World War. In the post-war period, the destroyed bridge was rebuilt to the same design, this time with concrete piers.

Construction

The four spans are built as braced trusses with vertical posts and a track deck running below. Above the main opening sits a parabolic truss girder, its top chords linked by wind bracing. Parallel-chord truss girders connect on either side.
