History
Umpfenbach looks back on an eventful past. The place has been documented since 1285 and long formed an imperially immediate lordship within the Holy Roman Empire – an enclave in the midst of the Amt Miltenberg.
Amid the upheavals of the early 19th century, the small territory changed hands several times. Through the Confederation of the Rhine treaty, sovereignty passed to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806. In the autumn of 1810, Umpfenbach moved to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt in a three-way arrangement between France, Baden and Hesse; at that time the area belonged to the Counts of Trauttmansdorff. Finally, in 1817 Umpfenbach was ceded to the Kingdom of Bavaria.
