A Roman watchtower on Limes stretch 7 whose frontier surveillance was run by the reconnaissance unit stationed at the Miltenberg-Ost fort.
Watchtower Wp 7/13 was part of the chain of posts securing the Outer Limes south of the Miltenberg-Ost fort. No individual excavation findings survive for this tower; its purpose follows from the task of the entire line of watchtowers.

Role on the frontier
Watchtowers like Wp 7/13 served to secure and monitor the border zone. From them the foreground could be observed and signals passed on – they were the eyes of the frontier troops along the Limes.

The stretch began at the Miltenberg-Ost fort, garrisoned by a reconnaissance unit of about 120 men, the Numerus Exploratorum Seiopensium. This unit handled the securing and surveillance duties at the northern start of the Outer Limes and thereby also guarded the towers of the advanced frontier line.
Dating and protection
The Outer Limes and its towers were occupied around 159/160 AD. Today the site, as part of the UNESCO World Heritage, is a ground monument under the Bavarian Monument Protection Act; investigations require a permit and chance finds must be reported.
