History of the Pharmacy
The founding of the pharmacy as early as 1514 underlines Miltenberg's importance in the 16th century. At that time there was no other pharmacy far and wide – not even Aschaffenburg, the residence city of the Prince-Bishops of Mainz, had one yet. The pharmacy then remained in operation for more than 500 years without interruption.
A Trading Town on the Main
Miltenberg lay on the major trade route running from Venice via Nuremberg to Frankfurt. From here the river Main was navigable, so goods could be transferred from carts onto boats. This transshipment point gave the town great significance, and the many travelling merchants made a pharmacy worthwhile as early as 1514.
Collection & Exhibition
On display are old furnishings, vessels, stills, mortars and historically important herbals. The objects are placed in the context of the medical world of past centuries, so that visitors experience not only the history of the Miltenberg pharmacy but also the wider story of European pharmacy.
Visiting
The museum is open on Fridays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. It is located in the Old Town Pharmacy at Hauptstraße 116 in the heart of Miltenberg.
