St. Josef

The older part of the church was built around the middle of the 18th century. As the space eventually proved too small, the building was lengthened towards the end of the 19th century – the floor plan was stretched along its axis rather than the church being rebuilt from scratch. Today the listing covers not only the building itself but also its furnishings and the wall enclosing the churchyard.

St. Josef is a hall church: the interior forms a single undivided hall, without side aisles and without rows of columns breaking it up. To the east it ends in a flush three-sided chancel – the altar area does not close in a rounded apse but in three straight wall sections, and "flush" means it is exactly as wide as the nave, continuing its outer walls without any narrowing.

The masonry is plastered; windows and doors are framed in ashlar, that is, in dressed blocks of natural stone that stand out light against the render. The gable façade, by contrast, was left unplastered, so the bare masonry remains visible there. Above the gable roof sits a slate-clad spire – a tapering tower cap whose outer skin is covered with slate tiles; the thin, dark stone shingles protect the timber beneath from the weather.
