For the first two layings of Stolpersteine in 2016 and 2017, a total of 35 descendants of the victims – children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren – traveled specially to Miltenberg from the United Kingdom, Canada and Israel.
Idea and Concept
The stones set into the ground commemorate people from Miltenberg who were persecuted and murdered during Nazi rule. Demnig has laid such stones across large parts of Europe.
Initiative and Decision
The initiative "Miltenberger Stolpersteine – GEGEN DAS VERGESSEN" (Against Forgetting) was founded in late 2013. Its motto draws on the jurist Fritz Bauer (1903–1968), who was forced into emigration because of his Jewish heritage: "Nothing belongs to the past, everything is present and can become the future again." On 28 January 2015 the city council approved the project, and on 27 May 2016 Demnig introduced it in a public lecture.
Installations
The stones were laid on 28 May 2016 (nine stones), 26 June 2017 (21 stones), and 3 July 2018 (fourteen stones). The Mittelschule, Realschule, and Gymnasium all took part, with students developing their own contributions. At the first two ceremonies, a total of 35 descendants of the victims came from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Israel.
Guided Tour
City guide Rita Geffert regularly offers a tour titled "Against Forgetting." It begins with a slide presentation in the museum's basement and continues to the Stolpersteine as well as the mikveh, the synagogues, and the old Jewish cemetery.
