St Sebastian Chapel

Until the late 16th century, the parish church of the settlement of Geißern, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, stood on this same spot. During the period of Reformed rule in Wachtendonk between 1578 and 1588, this predecessor was destroyed in 1583 — a fate shared in those years by many Catholic churches in the region, whose altars and images were removed. Only in 1620 did a new chapel rise on the site, once again consecrated to Saint Sebastian. A little over a century later, in 1727, the building was enlarged.

The chapel measures 15.30 metres in length and 5.80 metres in width, its interior spanned by a barrel vault. On the eastern gable sits a cross from the first half of the 18th century, and a niche in the gable once held the statue of Saint Sebastian, which has since found a new home in the parish church of St Marien. Beneath the niche runs the inscription "In honour of the victor Sebastian 1766". Before a renovation the chapel contained an altar with a figure of Saint Sebastian; because the building was to be used as a mortuary hall thereafter, this altar was removed. Today the listed structure serves as a cemetery chapel for funeral ceremonies.
