History
A building is known to have stood on the site before the hotel's first record. The earliest documented reference is the registration of Trestam zum Riesen as landlord in 1411. In 1590 the house was rebuilt by architect Jacob Stoer, with 100 logs provided by the city council.
Renovations and Ownership
The building has been reworked several times. A renovation followed in 1948 at a cost of DM 250,000. In 1970 the house was bought for DM 194,000 and then renovated. In 2001 the local chain Faust Brauhaus acquired the hotel.
Notable Guests
Guests over the centuries included the Holy Roman Emperors Frederick Barbarossa and Charles IV. The commanders on both sides of the Thirty Years' War, Johann Tserclaes and Gustavus Adolphus, stayed here as well. Elvis Presley also lodged at Zum Riesen.
